Born in Rochester in 1865, the painter Charles Spencelayh was still exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1958, the year of his death. Throughout his long career, he employed his amazing technical skills to remain faithful to the Victorian styles of his youth, happily ignoring the varying dictates of fashion. Partly because of that, his reputation has never been higher. This talk uses the substantial Spencelayh collection at the Guildhall Museum to analyse his work and consider his achievements.
